About Me and My Musical Journey With Sasquatch Flutes

Myflute journey began back in 2017.

About Me

Myflute journey began back in 2017.  I have always been curious about Native American flutes.  I had never seen one or touched one in person.  I decided to venture out and buy one.  I started to research flutes for sale online but didn’t know the quality or any other information about them.

Before diving in, I decided to check on craigslist and couldn’t believe that I found a set of twelve, pre owned, flutes in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Super excited, I drove down to Tennessee, like it was a covert operation, and met a guy at a gas station. I bought the flutes, not knowing anything about them, and couldn’t wait to come home and start playing with them. I drove straight back home which is not my style as I prefer to enjoy the journey home and sightsee.

I rushed back, cleaned them up and started to explore what these flutes were about.  They were beautiful and made of different kinds of wood. I’ve loved to make things from wood ever since I was a kid and this has sparked something in me.  A couple of weeks had passed and I received a text, from the guy that I bought them from, asking me how my “Flute Journey” was going.  I said I really didn’t know what I was doing and that I’m going to need some lessons.

He said that I should get in with a nearby Flute Circle.  I was clueless so he gave me a website to find a local group.  I looked it up here and found the Miami Valley Flute Circle in Dayton, Ohio.  I reached out to the leader and was invited to the next meeting.  Everyone was really nice and welcomed me to come back.

Eventually, I bought a couple of new flutes from a maker that was within the flute circle. I got married in 2019 and we set out on our honeymoon in upstate New York.  We’d been driving all day and when we stopped for the night, I decided to sit on a bench, next to a lake, and play one of my new flutes.

As I’m playing a song that I just made up, which is called “playing from the heart”, a young boy, about 10 years old, rode his bike all the way around the lake and came right up to me. He asked, “what is that?” “That is beautiful”!  I told him it was a Native American flute and he wanted to know where he could get one.  I gave him a business card from the maker that made my flute. I showed him a quick lesson and he rode off like he was on a covert operation to get himself a Native American flute. I wish I had one to give him right then.  It was a great moment having him ride right up to me like that!

I’m still “playing from the heart” and I am now making flutes. You just never know what new path you’ll go down when you start playing the Native American flute. I’m here to tell you that you will make new friends and enjoy being part of a group that loves their flutes too! You’ll have fun and while you’re playing someday…someone will come up to you and say “what is that?” That’s beautiful!” That’s when you’ll be able to share the magic of the Native American flute with them and start them on their own flute journey”!
